Australia's Northern Territory at a Glance
Australia's Northern Territory is a vast region encompassing diverse geography,
stretching from the tip of the continent's craggy northern coastline, through
awe-inspiring, boundless tropics, finishing at the blazing red centre of the
continent and the town of Alice
Springs. Waterfalls and wind have carved telling rock formations throughout,
including Uluru,
or, Ayers
Rock, and the landscape crawls with rare and remarkable wildlife.
Darwin is the territory's capital,
and its relaxed atmosphere and location make it a convenient hub for touring
the area, with the Kakadu,
Litchfield and Nitmiluk
national parks all nearby. The present-day calm is a far cry from the days of
the Second World War, when Darwin was heavily bombed and all but destroyed by
Axis armies. Geographically closer to Jakarta than Sydney, nearer to Singapore
than Melbourne, Darwin can be said to be truly multicultural. The Northern Territory's
second largest city, Katherine,
shyly emerging as a top-rate vacation destination, is only a short drive from
the tropical limestone Cutta
Cutta Caves and the healing waters of the Mataranka Thermal Pools.
